The Power of Ideas

Since an idea is the result of familiar factors
It’s not unreasonable to suggest that nothing is ever new
And that elemental changes in circumstances
As life, subject to time, continues to present different sets of events
Enable novel notions

Thus, to be original
Implies that one should apply fresh thinking
By enquiring into established estimations
In order to come upon divergent realisations

But to do so
Creativity, imagination, and reasoning
Should be brought to bear
For the purposes of problem solving
And if one happens to have a dream
Then all meaning will be discoverable in the transformation of the vision into reality

  1. This is deep. I can read a lot into this, and I couldn’t help but think of it almost like spoken word poetry. For me it rings true in many ways, since some people say every story is just a recycled retelling of an old tale and that no new journey through literature exists. It’s incredible to think of the conflict that we get between being told to be independent and free-thinking while being told that everything we do, say, or think has been done, said, or thought of already. Such is the world we live in, I guess.

Hi Damean, thanks for your message. I’m pleased it resonates with you. That’s a huge compliment to say it reads well.
I totally agree with you, and to avoid the conflict, I concern myself with honest expression more than I do the origination of thought since that is common to all humanity. Have a great weekend. ✌

  3. Each moment is refreshingly new, even though the themes remain the same. I think the poem would be more “powerful” if you lost the last line. It turns imaginative into preachy. (Hope you don’t mind the advice.)

Hi Kath, your point made sense so I made the adjustment. Thanks (and no, I don’t mind at all. I value feedback 😁).
